TREASURER'S REPORTS

The Association's fiscal year is May 1 - April 30.  The Treasurer produces reports at each Board meeting and at the end of the fiscal year.  The statements cover income and expenses from the previous report, balances in the accounts as of the date of the report, and income and expenses categorized by budget line item since the beginning of the fiscal year.

For the budget statement, the first column shows the amount approved by the membership at the beginning of the year.  The second column reflects those totals plus any (1) voted changes in the budget, and (2) increases in line items resulting from offsetting receipts.  The third column is the year-to-date totals.  Some money on hand is held in reserves, specifically the capital reserve and gypsy moth reserve.  Reserve funds represent money raised in one year to be spent in another.  In January, the Association pays to the Lake Placid Waterway Improvement Tax District an amount based on the number of paid boat ramp permits; this helps underwrite the cost of dredging the lake and the channel to the river.  "Unobligated operating reserve" is the amount on hand not designated for specific future use.

MEETING MINUTES

The Association holds two kinds of meetings.  Once every quarter, the general membership meets.  Once a month, the Board of Directors meets.  Minutes are posted on this website after they are approved at the following meeting.

General Meetings

The Association usually holds meetings for the general membership four times a year, once each quarter.  These typically fall in the third week of July, October, January, and April. At the October ("Election") meeting, new officers and directors are voted on.  At the January meeting, the new officers are inaugurated (actually taking office February 1).  At the April ("Annual") meeting, a budget is presented and voted on.

Minutes are currently available from the meetings for FY 2002-03. No minutes are shown for meetings that failed to reach a quorum.

ARTICLES OF INCORPORATION AND BYLAWS

Although Shore Acres was created in 1921, the Shore Acres Improvement Association was not created until 1947, when neighborhood residents sought to organize to prevent the loss of the community beach and rights of way, and to promote improvements in the community.  The Association was incorporated at that time.  It's bylaws were substantially revised several times since then, most recently in 1990.

The Shore Acres Improvement Association is a non-stock corporation chartered by the state of Maryland.  As a non-profit community association, SAIA is exempt from the corporation income tax and from property taxes.  However, gifts to the Association are not tax deductible.
