THE LATEST NEWSLETTER IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD! July 2008 In This Issue:
April 30 marked the end of the Association's fiscal year and time for members to renew their membership. Notices were mailed out last week. Boaters needing Boat ramp permits have until May 10 to get them. The lock on the ramp gate will be changed that day. Members have three choices to obtain permits and keys:
Don't throw away the old key until you have tested the new one in the gate lock and found it to work. If you are uncertain of your membership status you can check right here on the website. You will get a response within a few days. The proposal to build a pavilion at the a community beach was approved by the membership at (and leading up to) the general meeting of the Association on April 18. The Board made arrangements so that membership could vote by mail, on the internet, and at the meeting (both in person and by proxy). This voting procedure had been used by the Association before, and went relatively smoothly. A few attempts to vote had to be disqualified because the voters were not currently members. In addition, some submitted mail-in ballots too late to be counted, including a few that were sent in under the misimpression that they constituted proxies (a proxy is a statement conveying one's right to vote at a meeting to another member in attendance). All in all, roughly half the eligible members of the Association cast a vote one way or another. The final vote was 109 in favor to 96 opposed. Internet votes ran 86 to 55 in favor. Mail-in ballots were 6 to 10 against. Votes at the meeting were 17 to 31 against. (Proxy votes are cast on the same ballots as that of attendees, and cannot be separately identified.) Had the late mail-in ballots been counted, the outcome would not have been changed. In the next few weeks, the Board will approve a final design and appoint someone to direct the project. After that, we will begin the application process with the County. It is possible that the County will ultimately deny permission to build. But the process is so involved, that we made the decision to test the membership's sentiment, before expending funds or more effort in seeking approval. We will be posting updates periodically on the website when events in the process occur. MAGOTHY RIVER ASSOC HIGHLIGHTS Ed Bond, our Magothy River Association Rep, recently attended an MRA meeting. He was able to pickup some handouts and fliers at the meeting which may be of interest:
The MRA and the Magothy River were featured in the Maryland Public Television special "Weary Shoreline". It first aired in February and last aired during Chesapeake Bay Week on April 24, 2008. There are no known additional airings scheduled. Note: All information, including phone numbers and addresses, collected by the SAIA is used for Association communications only.
